Where to Start with Sandra Brown

→ New to Sandra Brown’s romantic thrillers? Her standalone romantic suspense novels are where most readers start, with Slow Heat in Heaven (1988), which was her first book in the genre, but any of her 1990s and 2000s standalones (French Silk, The Crush, Chill Factor) work just as well.
→ Prefer a series to a standalone? Start with Texas! Lucky (Texas! Tyler Family Saga #1) for her earlier romantic series, or Smash Cut (Mitchell & Associates #1) for her later, more thriller-based series
→ Her two standalone sections on this page are based on two different eras and readerships of her books: the Standalone Romantic Suspense Thrillers (late 1980s onward) and the Standalone Romance Novels (writing romances under pen names). They don’t connect or share characters.

How the Series Connect

None of Sandra Brown’s series connect in storyline or characters, with an exception. Tough Customer (Mitchell & Associates #2) was written to give Dodge Hanley, one of the supporting characters in Smash Cut, his own story. Sandra Brown said that she liked this character enough to go back and revisit him.

Sandra Brown was born Sandra Lynn Cox on March 12, 1948, in Waco, Texas, and grew up in Fort Worth, where she grew up reading detective novels.. Her father was a journalist and her mother was a counsellor. She studied English at Texas Christian University, but she left in 1968 when she married Michael Brown, a former television news anchor and documentary producer. After her marriage, she worked as a weather reporter for TV stations in Tyler and Dallas including WFAA-TV, and as a feature reporter on the nationally syndicated program PM Magazine. When she was let go from her television job in 1979, she decided to write full time instead.

In 1981, she published her debut novel, Love’s Encore, using the pen name Rachel Ryan, which she created from the first names of her two children. This effectively started her writing career. In addition, she also used the pen names Laura Jordan and Erin St. Claire to write romances for Bantam’s Loveswept and Dell’s Candlelight Ecstasy lines before publishing her novels under her own name. By the mid-1980s, Sandra Brown had moved from straight-up romance novels to the romantic suspense and thriller genre that she is currently best known for, and which she still continues writing today. Some of her titles that are still widely read today are Slow Heat in Haven, Best Kept Secrets, and French Silk, which was later adapted for television. These books made her one of the most popular authors in her genre.

From the beginning of 1990, Sandra Brown published around one book per year, each landing on the New York Times bestseller list. So far, her novels have been translated into 34 language.

  1. She is such a brilliant writer, I am not sure if I want to go back to the beginning, reading in order those written early in her career. Most of what I have read appears in more recent offerings. Any. suggestions??

  2. Just read my first Sandra Brown ~ Mean Streak. Does it honestly end with the husband, Jeff, not charged with the murder? With the two crazy brothers on the loose from the hospital ready to seek revenge on Hayes Bannock? How’s Alice going to react when she figures out she’s been used? I was ready to turn the page for the next chapter and the story was over! I searched for a series and find all her books are stand alones. I’m afraid to read another if they end with too many questions. ☹️

  3. has sandra brown used dodge haney in any novels except smash cut and tough guy

  4. I have read all of her books, except for the latest, Thick as Thieves. Plan to read that one soon. Sandra Brown is my favorite author and I have read many books from various authors.

  5. Just finished Mean Streak for the second time. Couldn’t put it down this time either. This woman has a talent most of us just dream about!

  6. I had no idea, when I opened and read my first book (around 17 or 18 yrs. old) that it would enhance my life, bring me every wave of emotion known. I’m now 78, retired and have collected books along my journey of life. Thank God for good books. Ms. Brown has given me much to enjoy and learn from. Thank you for that! I can’t just pick one book that is the “outstanding” one for me. There’s just too many of hers. Her words grab at you to the point where you won’t want to finish something else (not a book, but cleaning, cooking, calling someone back, etc.). You have to FINISH this book you are reading!!!! Not to just finish it, but learn all the “why’s, who, when) that answer all your questions you now have about the characters and the plot. THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR STORIES!

  7. Except for new one Thick as Thieves I have read every one of these books–presently working on the ones she wrote before this list: i.e. Sunset Embrace and Another Dawn—both soooo good.
From this list #1 favorite is “Envy” #2 Where There’s Smoke and The Alibi #3 all the rest!

  8. I’m currently reading Outfox and keep thinking the main character Drex needs sequels. I think many of her books main characters need sequels. Great writing and character development.

  9. I just finished reading Sting> Great book. I’ve on her wibesite to get a list ofall her book titlers so I can request them from the liebray as I’am 85 years old and have a lot of time on my hands to read >

  10. Sandra Brown’s books are the books they are talking about when they say, ” you can’t put it down”. I discovered her about a year ago when a friend gave me a box of books. Mean Streak and Lethal were in that box and I’ve been reading her books almost non-stop since. Three cheers for Sandra Brown, if you haven’t read anything yet ,there’s over 70 to choose from! Pick one.
