Sandra BrownSandra Brown Biography – About the Author

New York Time bestselling author Sandra Lynn Brown was born in 1948 in Waco, Texas. She grew up in Forth Worth, and later she majored with a degree in English lit at the Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.

Sandra grew up in a normal life surrounded by a family love for books, with her mother being an avid reader and her father a newspaper editorial writer. Thus, Sandra Brown’s upbringing instilled in her a great joy for books long before becoming an author.

In 1968 she abandoned college in favor of getting married to Michael Brown, an ex-TV news anchor who produced the TV documentary Dust to Dust earning him several awards. As a lifelong Texan, she lives with her husband in Arlington, Texas.

Like numerous authors as well, before becoming a full-time writer, she held several jobs. She worked for KLTV in Tyler as a weathercaster, after which she returned to Fort Worth to work as a journalist for WFAA of PM Magazine, basically in the media, for the ABC affiliate in Dallas.

When she was fired from her job as a weathercaster at a television station in Dallas along with many other people, this is when her husband gently nudged her to become a writer, helping her discover the first gripping story she would end up writing. He told her that, with all the free time she now had, it was time to follow her dream of becoming a writer.

Sandra Brown began her writing career in 1981 when her first book was published under the title Love’s Encore, which she wrote under the pen name Rachel Ryan. Over the years, she also wrote under the names Laura Jordan and Erin St. Claire. From her very first book, she put all her energy in writing novel after novel, focusing on her full-time writing career and creating several New York Times bestsellers in the process.

So far, she has written over 75 books, which include romance novels, historical romances and most of all romantic suspense/thriller novels. Her first romantic suspense novel was written in 1988 under the title Slow Heat in Heaven. It was also the first book I have read by this author. Her first novel, a romance novel was Love’s Encore in 1981. It is no surprise that she is on such a popular bestseller list.

Her books have been printed eighty million copies worldwide and have been translated into 34 languages.

She has an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Texas Christian University and at some point, she was president of Mystery Writers of America.

In 2011, she went on a USO tour to Afghanistan with four other colleagues, including Clive Cussler, Mark Bowden, Kathy Reichs and Andrew Peterson. The group met the brave soldiers fighting in Afghanistan and thanked the troops for their service. All these authors have written military mysteries and thrillers.

Thus, when she went home and started thinking of her next book, she had several ideas about civilians who return from the trenches with PTSD. So, her next novel, Deadline, features the main character, Dawson Scott, a news magazine journalist who covered the war in Afghanistan and went home with PTSD. She drew some of the ideas in her book from her trip to that war-zone country.

For her standalone novels, she also gets many of her ideas from a character that she envisions in her mind.

She writes approximately one novel per year (her books usually come out just in time for the summer holidays, making for some wonderful beach reads). A favorite novel is titled Seeing Red, published in 2017.

The book features a journalist (a theme that reoccurs in the Sandra Brown books) and John Trapper, a former ATF agent. When an old photo resurfaced with Kerra Bailey, the journalist and John Trapper’s father, all hell broke loose. Also, someone didn’t want the photo given too much attention due to something that happened 25 years ago. In fact, he wants that so much buried that he is able and willing to kill for it.

The book is a suspenseful romance which keeps you on the edge of your seat all the time. But then again, Sandra Brown’s books tend to do that to the readers. So when you start it – or any other books – make sure you have plenty of time to read, because once you start, it’s not so easy to put her books down.

The 2018 Sandra Brown book (one of my favorites) is Tailspin. It features Rye Mallett, a charter pilot with no qualms about taking dangerous transporting jobs when others avoid doing these trips. This latest trip, however, takes place during extremely bad weather and the cargo is something strange as well. Especially when Rye is shot at and almost killed while landing.

Enter Dr. Brynn O’Neal, who states that the cargo is really hers, and who gives a really strange vibe off to Rye. Can he trust her, and will trusting her lead to anything good, or only to his utter deceit?

Another favorite Sandra Brown novel, again a standalone story, features FBI agent Drex Easton who is in pursuit of a chameleon, conman Weston Graham, who keeps evading him. When he’s finally getting closer to catching him, Drex poses as the neighbor of couple Jasper Ford and Talia Shafer, where he suspects that Jasper is, in fact, Weston Graham. But what about beautiful Talia? Is she his accomplished or an innocent person who might become Weston’s next victim?

Apart from standalone romance and romantic suspense novels, Sandra Brown has also written several romance series. The series list includes the Coleman Family Saga books, the Bed & Breakfast books, the Mason Sisters books, the Tyler Family Saga books, and the Mitchell & Associates books. The Astra & Devil series was originally written under the Erin St. Clare pen name.

  1. All I know, is that when I get to read a Sandra Brown novel, I cannot put it down. Because of Sandra Brown, my house looks like a pig sty…nothing is completed like it should be. Sandra Brown, you’ve ruined my life, but in a good way. Keep those books coming, and I’ll hire a housekeeper.

  2. At the end of one of Sandra Brown’s audiobooks is a preview of “Shadows of Yesterday.” I’m hooked, but I can’t find it in Audible or Amazon, where I could purchase a paperback, but I prefer audio recordings. Where can I purchase and download “Shadows of Yesterday”?

  3. My daughter told me about Sandra’s books, and I made it my decision to look her up and start reading one of these good books, well … it seem as though my daughter was right, I knew from the start I loved the very first book. I am a 75 old female and I have started from the first book she wrote, Best Kept Secrets (1989). and I wanted to read these in order, but they have been taken off the list.. DARN!

  4. I have read a number of Sandra’s books and have enjoyed them but I have just read “OUTFOX” and this was one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read.I an a 75 year old male and have been a prolific reader my whole life.
Thank you and keep up the great writing.

  5. She is such a brilliant writer, I am not sure if I want to go back to the beginning, reading in order those written early in her career. Most of what I have read appears in more recent offerings. Any. suggestions??

  6. Just read my first Sandra Brown ~ Mean Streak. Does it honestly end with the husband, Jeff, not charged with the murder? With the two crazy brothers on the loose from the hospital ready to seek revenge on Hayes Bannock? How’s Alice going to react when she figures out she’s been used? I was ready to turn the page for the next chapter and the story was over! I searched for a series and find all her books are stand alones. I’m afraid to read another if they end with too many questions. ☹️

  7. I have read all of her books, except for the latest, Thick as Thieves. Plan to read that one soon. Sandra Brown is my favorite author and I have read many books from various authors.

  8. Just finished Mean Streak for the second time. Couldn’t put it down this time either. This woman has a talent most of us just dream about!

  9. I had no idea, when I opened and read my first book (around 17 or 18 yrs. old) that it would enhance my life, bring me every wave of emotion known. I’m now 78, retired and have collected books along my journey of life. Thank God for good books. Ms. Brown has given me much to enjoy and learn from. Thank you for that! I can’t just pick one book that is the “outstanding” one for me. There’s just too many of hers. Her words grab at you to the point where you won’t want to finish something else (not a book, but cleaning, cooking, calling someone back, etc.). You have to FINISH this book you are reading!!!! Not to just finish it, but learn all the “why’s, who, when) that answer all your questions you now have about the characters and the plot. THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR STORIES!
