J.D. Robb Biography – About the Author

J.D. Robb is the pen name of the New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts. The JD Robb series focuses on New York City Police and Security Department Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her sexy hubby Roarke, who solve crimes in New York in the mid-21st century.

Nora Roberts was born as Eleanor Marie Robertson in 1950 in Silver Spring, Maryland, US as the youngest of five children to parents of Irish descent.

Growing up in a family of heavy readers, books became important to her quite early in life. She would always create stories in her mind, but it took her many years to put those stories to paper. It was not until a heavy blizzard in 1979 when she wrote her very first novel, Irish Thoroughbred, which was published in 1981.

She met her future husband, Ronald Aufdem-Brinke, in high school, and the two married – against her parents’ wishes – in 1968, right after her graduation. They had two sons together, and they divorced in 1983.

Two years later, in 1985, she married Bruce Wilder, a carpenter, who would become her second and current husband. Her husband owns Turn the Page Books bookstore in Boonsboro, Maryland. They also restored and now own the Boone Hotel into the Inn BoonsBoro after a fire in 2008. As a fun fact, the suites in the hotel are named after famous romantic couples from books and movies with happy endings, such as those from “Pride and Prejudice,” “The Princess Bride,” “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” and “The Thin Man.”

An already established author, J.D. Robb decided (at the nudging of her agent)  to start writing under a new alias to capture a different kind of audience for a new series she wanted to start – a new futuristic crime mystery series, feeling that this book series will be less in line with what she’s been writing so far.

J. D. Robb

And the J.D. Robb In Death novels were born with the first book, Naked in Death, published in 1995.

The complete list of the JD Robb series takes place in the future, where intergalactic travel is common for those who can afford it. However, the only futuristic element is the ability to travel between planets, stars, and moons.

While the book series is set in the future and there are some latest technology gadgets, tools, flying cars, and spaceships, all the books are contemporary. They are not sci-fi thrillers, but tried and tested futuristic romance, aka romantic suspense novel series adored by readers worldwide.

Yet, it is a typical and enjoyable blend of romantic suspense and crime fiction featuring attractive and intelligent characters, such as Lieutenant Eve Dallas, Eve’s husband Roarke, and other characters such as fellow officers and common friends like the adorable Delia Peabody, and other charming individuals.

Nora Roberts, aka J.D. Robb, has so far sold over 400 million of her books in print. She is, in fact, only one of the two most influential authors out of 100 that the Times magazine wrote about in 2007. With her J.D. Robb alias alone, she sold more than one million books on Kindle. And that was only in the early year, 2011.

Although the J.D. Robb series featuring Lieutenant Eve Dallas can be repetitive when read consecutively, the entire series remains a set of highly regarded romantic suspense novels that are quickly purchased upon release.

Even the shorter novellas, such as Midnight in Death, feature fully developed storylines, only condensed.

The In Death book series contains violent murder scenes and explicit sexual content between the main characters, Eve and Roarke. If you prefer clean books, this series may not be suitable for you. However, it is a popular romantic suspense futuristic cop series that many enjoy as a perfect beach read, and each next book brings more and more adventures with his hot couple.

I recommend reading the stories in the correct chronological order for each next book to appreciate the development of the main and secondary characters fully. This will allow you to witness their interactions and growth within the book’s settings. Following Eve and Roarke’s ongoing romance throughout the entire series is particularly enjoyable, even though they are already married. The In Death series takes place in mid-21st century New York City, with some occasional off-Earth settings, and incorporates futuristic elements and advanced technology.

J.D. Robb received the Rita Awards Best Novel winner in 2010 with Survivor in Death.

Who is Eve Dallas?

In the Death books by JD Robb, Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas was born in 2028. She endured a traumatic childhood, abused by her father until the night she killed him in self-defense. Afterward, she ran away and was eventually found by a police officer who took her to a hospital. From there, she entered foster care and changed her name to Eve Dallas.

Growing up, her dream was to become a police officer, so she joined and graduated from the NYPSD Academy, and later join the police force.

She started as a patrol officer before transferring to the Homicide Division, where she solved numerous cases with Captain Ryan Feeney. Eventually, Feeney was promoted to Captain and got transferred to the Electronic Detectives Division, while Eve was promoted to Detective and later became a Lieutenant in charge of a Homicide squad at NYPSD’s Cop Central.

Throughout her career, Eve was highly skilled in defensive and combat techniques, and she was never shied away from taking down criminals on her own. She met several people who became her good friends, including Dr. Charlotte Mira, Detective Delia Peabody, and Detective Ian McNab. Additionally, it was during her work that she met her love interest and later husband, Rourke.

What Is The Latest JD Robb Book?

Currently, there are 58 In Death / Lieutenant Eve Dallas books published, with a new one to be released in September 2024. There are also 12 In Death shorter stories, and several anthologies and collections.

  1. ?I started listening to Eve Dallas & Roake in the middle and then I wanted to know what happen to Eve to make her the way she was SHE IS ALITTLE UNEDUCATED ABOUT life she asks some of the childest questions like who decide why men should wear suit and ladies should wear dresses

  2. ?I started listening to Eve Dallas & Roake in the middle and then I wanted to know what happen to Eve to make her the way she was SHE IS ALITTLE UNEDUCATED ABOUT life she asks some of the childest questions like who decide why men should wear suit and ladies should wear dresses

  3. @Denise Webb A new one is coming out this September, followed by one next February.

  4. In which book did Eve and Roarke go the the premiere of ” The Icove Agenda”? I know it was before the movie won the
Academy Award for Nadine and after “Celebrity in Death”
    Thanks

  5. I can never get enough of these book. Totally in love with them. I can never put them down. Very addictive. Working on getting the whole collection so I can start from the very beginning. Continue the great work!!

  6. Please tell what title is it when Peabody is hiding in basement/locker room and overhears bad cops?

  7. I love the Eve Dallas Series also, and was very surprised when I learned she was Nora Roberts being a fan of hers also. Roberts/Robb has such a wonderful imagination. Some of her Roberts books would not appeal to all because they are basically love stories. Then you have the books that have the supernatural mixed in, psychological thrillers and crime stories also. So for those who love these books give Roberts a chance you might find yourself pleasantly surprised.

    1. I too love the JD Robb books with Eve Dallas. I read my first one 15-20 years ago. Over the years, I have read all the books up to and including Treachery In Death. I refuse to get rid of any and have a whole bookcase shelf full of them.

Because of various health problems, I slacked off in my reading, but started reading again and will pick up on the Eve Dallas books again. I can’t wait to get started. Also, I agree that you must read them in order to really get to know the characters.

  8. I got hooked on the In Death series by accident and now have made reading every book # 1`on my Bucket List. If I had know about Eve and Roake before I would have retired years ago. However, I totoally disagree with making a TV series out of these books. The beauty of reading is that each reader creates the perfect way the characters look, their expressions and their actions and that is what makes reading so much fun. You create the perfect mental picture that suits what you are reading. If the books are ever translated into a TV show the appearance of the characters will be in some casting director’s image not mine and I will be turned off because I now am imprinted with my mental images.

    1. I love this series, and as for making movies from it – I so agree never doing that; I have watched movies taken from books that liked, and my fantasy image was so totally NOT THE SAME

  9. Love, love, love the In death series! Love the characters! I especially loved the first one, Naked in Death, which I have read multiple times. I’d love to see Eve get pregnant, but I certainly wouldn’t want the series to end! These are by far my favorite books. ( And I have never read any Nora Roberts book. I don’t go for that kind).

    1. I agree about Eve and Roarke becoming parents (and Summerset, godfather?? nanny? and sibling rivalry for Galahad.) I am sure it will be a huge challenge for Nora Roberts but she can do it!!

  10. I’m not reading or listening in order. Trying to. Nora said she will stop the series when Eve becomes pregnant.
Too bad. I would love to see how Eve would handle pregnant, and having a baby handed to her.
Love the books. Just wish I knew about them when they started.

  11. I got bored and borrowed #1 of the In Death series. WOW! I love my new addiction with that series. I had months to enjoy catching up with each book in the series order. Then, caught up, waiting for the next book was tough. I can’t have enough of Eve’s and Rourke’s adventures.

My sincere thank you, J D Robb.

  12. If you start on immortal in death first then read the first two will you be lost in immortal in death? Asking cause im waiting on the library to send me the first two but i want to read already.

    1. You won’t really be lost as each book has a separate case that Eve deal with. The reason why is best to read the books in order is because of the developing famous relationship between Eve and Rourke. In later books they might be in a different stage of relationship, so when you go back to earlier books it might feel like you already know the spoiler. But lost, no, you won’t be.

    2. When the library is too slow, I go the ebook route thru media on demand or overdrive. I typically get them right away as most people have already read the oldest. Also, they have the collection books, where you can get several books in one and all in order! When I found those, they became my go to and now I’m caught up to 2016 already!

  13. I like them listed in the order they were written. This way you know who the people are who are added as their friends.

  14. I love this series. I have read them and reread them many times. I have said for years, I wish they would make a tv series out of these. The one that played on castle would be a great person to play eve.

  15. I agree that these series should be made into movies. A T.V. series (Amazon, Netflix…) would be a huge hit!
I would not want to see Eve and Roarke having a baby!

  16. someone suggested Marisa Hargitay would make a good Eve…no way ! She is too heavy.
Stana Katic would be better. and Matt Bomer would be perfect for Roarke

    1. Don’t know them I guess I’m older and don’t watch a lot of tv. I drive a truck and listen on audio. But I would b willing to stop on the night it comes on.

    2. Good grief no. This would take new people. Stana doesn’t have the look I imagine Eve does. The hard cop look mixed with female, with some muscled hard body. Matt Bomer doesn’t have the Irish look, nor the gleam in his eye. He doesn’t have the knowledge of the world and its workings, anti-cop except for Eve and that bunch, look.

Completely new people with no history. No shows you’d remember them in or played in.

    3. Stanic & Bomer would be perfect!
But then I think Matt Bomer is perfect! 🙂

  17. Thank you for compiling this list. I collect her books through various sources, so I like to keep updated with the series. I really enjoy the characters of these stories and novels.

  18. I just read Midnight in Death, but do not see it listed. I had every book in the series until I downsized in fall of 2015 and would like to know what books have been published, in death series only, since that time.

    1. Just realized it is listed…# 8. I thought it was a new book I downloaded, now I am very confused.

      1. Yes it is a novella published in 1998. The story takes place between Holiday in Death and Conspiracy in Death.

As people seem to get confused by the numbering before the book names, I have changed it, so now 7.5 is in fact novella #7.5 to avoid any confusions 🙂

  19. I love Dallas and Roake.they were made for each other. Peabody is good also.all the people that works with Eve are awesome.hope she never stops writing.i have read just about every book written, waiting for more

  20. Can you list in chronological order the sequence in Eve’s life. I have all the books in order of publication but not in sequence. Thanks.

    1. The sequence is pretty much the same as the publication order. I’ve read all (except the latest one) and the story basically continues from book to book.

  21. I would love for someone to make these In Death series into TV series. I think Marisa Hargitay would make an awesome Eve Dallas. I think this would be a success just as much as Law and Order:SVU. Hopefully someone will think this would make a great series. I love these books so much, I can hardly wait for the next one to come out. I’m now trying to get all of the books in the series. I foolishly gave a bunch of books to Goodwill and now I decided I want to save all of them. Keep writing J D. Don’t care about titles although I am sure there are plenty more you can one up with….. JUST PLEASE DON’T STOP WRITING ABOUT EVE AND ROARKE. LOVE THEM. THANKS.

    1. I agree 110% I’m so disappointed that I’ve finished all of them and I miss them.! My husband even listened and he is missing Peabody

  22. This list is still in the order that the books were published. That is not what I call the chronological sequence for reading. I would like to see a list chronologically in Eve’s life.

    1. I have the entire series and the list above is the sequence that I read them. It is a pretty accurate list if you are looking for the order to read them.

      1. I have read every one starting with Naked in death and was hooked looking forward to the new one
but i must say reading in order is the only way you can see the characters progress it is the best series i have read in along time.

    2. This list is in the order of Eve’s life. it just includes the Novella’s which aren’t exactly a part of her life timeline but do fit. Try reading them and you will see for yourself.
