Who is Eve Dallas?

Eve Dallas is the main protagonist of J.D. Robb’s long-running In Death series. She is a homicide lieutenant with the New York City Police and Security Department (NYPSD), where she investigates major violent crimes. The stories are set in New York City in the mid-21st century.

Eve leads a homicide squad at Cop Central and works closely with a recurring group of law enforcement colleagues as well as her husband Roarke, whose background and resources frequently intersect with her investigations.

Where to Start with the In Death Series

New to In Death? Start here:

  • Best starting point: Naked in Death – the first In Death novel, introducing Eve Dallas, Roarke, and the near-future New York setting. This is the recommended starting point for most readers.
  • If you picked up a later book first: the central case in each novel is usually self-contained, but character relationships and long-running story arcs develop over time. If you enjoy the later book, consider going back to Naked in Death and reading forward in publication order.
  • If you only care about the newest titles: you can start with a recent book and then decide whether to go back to the beginning. Just be aware that some character history will be mentioned.
