Born on January 6, 1971, in Covington, Georgia, Karin Slaughter grew up in Lake Spivey and attended Morrow High School in Ellenwood. She studied literature at Georgia State University before leaving to work in the sign industry, where she started her own sign business before turning to writing full time. She has said the years of failed early manuscripts were where she learned the craft.

Her debut novel, Blindsighted, published in 2001, introduced Sara Linton and Jeffrey Tolliver in the Grant County series and made her famous right away, earning a CWA Dagger nomination for Best Thriller Debut. She launched the Will Trent series in 2006 with Triptych, set in Atlanta, and merged the two series in Undone, published in 2009. Later standalone work, Pretty Girls, Cop Town, and Pieces of Her, made her popular beyond her series fans. She has since launched the Charlie Quinn, Andrea Oliver, and North Falls series.

Multiple adaptations are in production or on air: the Will Trent series has aired on ABC since 2023, and Pieces of Her debuted at #1 on Netflix in 2022. Slaughter is the founder of Save the Libraries, a nonprofit that has contributed over $300,000 to the DeKalb County Public Library in Atlanta. She lives in Georgia.
