Richard Van Anderson is a former heart surgeon turned novelist.

Richard Van Anderson was born in 1960 and earned his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at Louisiana State University in Shreveport, after which he trained in cardiothoracic surgery at New York University. He also completed a two year research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland

After finishing his training, he became a surgical attending at the University of Washington School of Medicine and Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Seattle Veterans Administration Hospital. His medical background is the foundation for his medical thriller novels.

His debut novel, The Organ Takers, which was published in 2014 and introduces David McBride, is the first book in his three-book series. Prior to writing his novel, he published a short story, The Final Push, in 2013.

In addition to his medical training, he earned a MFA in creative writing from Pine Manor College. He lives in Bellevue, Washington with his family.

His three novels in the David McBride series are strongly influenced by Richard Van Anderson’s personal medical experience as a surgeon. His books are part of the medical thriller genre, but the author called himself the inventor of the subgenre of surgical suspense.

Currently, the author , a Seattle suburb, with his wife, who is an oral surgeon, and their two sons. Earlier, he loved mountain climbing, but these days he is happy to take long walks and backpacking trips in the Cascades and Sierras.
