Joseph Antonelli Series (Books in Order)
The Joseph Antonelli series follows defense attorney Joseph Antonelli, one of the top criminal lawyers in the country, as he takes on difficult criminal cases that challenge both the legal system and his own sense of right and wrong. The first three books are mainly set in Portland, before the story later moves to San Francisco and Washington, D.C., where the cases become more political in nature. It’s best to start with book 1, The Defense, since Antonelli’s background and character develop throughout the series.

Dudley W. Buffa was born on December 8, 1940, in San Francisco and grew up in the Bay Area. He earned his B.A. from Michigan State University in 1963, followed by a J.D. from Wayne State University in Detroit in 1979, and right after, he received his M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Chicago in 1980, where he studied under political philosophers Leo Strauss and Hans J. Morgenthau.
He taught at Michigan State University, during the 1970s, and then he worked as a special assistant to U.S. Senator Philip A. Hart in Washington D.C., while at the same time leading the midwestern division of the National Rural Center.
After finishing his graduate studies, he moved to Oregon, where he joined Oregon Sate University to teach business administration as an assistant professor. At the same time, he also worked as a criminal defense lawyer, a career he had for ten years before working full time as an author. These years working in the legal field directly translated his knowledge and passion for the courtroom into the Joseph Antonelli series. His debut novel, The Defense, which was also the first novel in the series, was published in 1997 by Henry Holt and Co., and The New York Times called it an accomplished first novel.
Over the years, his writing changed from courtroom dramas to political thrillers, and eventually to philosophical historical fiction, which is seen in the Senator Bobby Hart series and later in the Western Quartet novels. Under his pen name Lawrence Alexander, he published Rubicon, the first book in the Bobby Hart series, and under his real name, Dudley W. Buffa, he also co-authored several non-fiction political books. He lives in Northern California.

what the heck – whose business is it?
One of the best in the genre. I learn from his novels. Characters have meat on their bones and depth. The Joseph Antonelli series are better than John Grisham unless you go for action.
