Book 23 in the Detective Kim Stone series. The case begins with D.I. Kim Stone being at the crime scene of the murder of a woman who seemed well liked, then opens out into a wider pattern as Kim tries to understand the logic behind the killer’s choices.
Ashley Reynolds is found stabbed in the chest, and Detective Kim Stone can tell straight away this is not a routine killing. Ashley was a devoted wife and mother, and nobody around her seems eager to speak badly of her. But her work as a social worker had made enemies, with some people blaming her for breaking families apart. At the same time, her husband is behaving oddly and making plans to leave town with their daughter.
Then a second woman is murdered in the same careful, controlled way. Nadine made a living setting men up, and some of those men held her responsible for wrecking their marriages. The pattern suggests the killer believes these women were immoral and deserved what happened to them.
When a third victim turns up, Kim and her team hit a wall. She does not seem to fit the same idea at all. As they race to find the link between the women, Kim starts to see where the case may be heading, and realizes the danger is not over yet.
