Lincoln Lawyer (Mickey Haller) Books in Order

The Lincoln Lawyer series follows Los Angeles defense attorney Mickey Haller, who works from the back seat of a Lincoln Town Car rather than a conventional office. The books are legal thrillers which involve legal tactics, plea bargaining, and the ethics of defending clients who aren’t always innocent. The series shares a universe with the Harry Bosch and Renée Ballard series, with several novels being crossovers between the three.

This page lists all Lincoln Lawyer novels in publication order, plus other Michael Connelly books where Mickey Haller appears.

Lincoln Lawyer Series (Books in Order)

The Lincoln Lawyer series follows Mickey Haller through a career that is defined by working the grey zones of the justice system, which includes defending clients he sometimes knows to be guilty, negotiating deals he doesn’t always believe in, and occasionally stumbling into cases that put him personally at risk. Set in Los Angeles courtrooms and county jails rather than crime scenes, the series has a different rhythm from Michael Connelly’s detective procedurals: slower burn, more strategic, with Mickey Haller’s moral compass as the focus tension. His relationship with his half-brother, Harry Bosch, runs through the series and plays a key role in several of the crossover novels.

Reading notes:

  • The Lincoln Lawyer books should be read in publication order, as Mickey Haller’s career, relationships, and ethics evolve across the series.
  • The Brass Verdict, The Reversal, The Law of Innocence and Resurrection Walk are key crossovers with Harry Bosch, who often works as Haller’s investigator.
  • If you’re watching the Netflix series, note that Season 1 adapts primarily from The Brass Verdict rather than The Lincoln Lawyer. For reading, publication order is still recommended.

Where to Start with the Lincoln Lawyer

New to Mickey Haller? Start here:

  • Best starting point: The Lincoln Lawyer – introduces Mickey, his Lincoln-based practice, and his approach to defending clients. This is still the best place to start if you like seeing the character’s full arc.
  • If you came from the Netflix show: you can start with The Brass Verdict (the book most closely associated with Season 1’s storyline) and then go back to The Lincoln Lawyer when you want the original case that built his reputation.
  • Full-universe approach: read the Lincoln Lawyer books in publication order and, when you reach crossover titles, check the Harry Bosch reading order page for where those books fit in Bosch’s timeline.
