Renée Ballard Books in Order

The Renée Ballard series follows LAPD detective Renée Ballard, who is initially assigned to the night shift (“the late show”) before eventually leading the Open-Unsolved Unit. The books mix modern police procedure, cold cases, and political friction inside the LAPD, and over time, her storyline becomes more closely connected to Harry Bosch’s world. The Ballard series is the most recent of Michael Connelly’s three main Bosch Universe series, launched in 2017.

This page lists all Renée Ballard novels in publication order, plus other Michael Connelly books where Ballard appears. For all Michael Connelly books in order, including the Harry Bosch series and the Lincoln Lawyer series, see our full Michael Connelly reading order page.

Renée Ballard Series (Books in Order)

The Renée Ballard series follows detective Renée Ballard as her career takes her from the isolation of the LAPD night shift to the complicated world of reopened cold cases. The series is set in a contemporary Los Angeles and reflects a more modern LAPD than the earlier Bosch novels with different institutional pressures and different politics. Her partnership with Harry Bosch, which begins in Dark Sacred Night, becomes central to both series from that point forward.

Reading Order

  1. The Late Show, 2017
  2. Dark Sacred Night, 2018
  3. The Night Fire, 2019
  4. The Dark Hours, 2021
  5. Desert Star, 2022
  6. The Waiting, 2024

Reading notes:

  • The Renée Ballard series works best in publication order, because her role in the LAPD changes over time (from night shift moving to cold case unit) and her relationship with Bosch develops across multiple books.
  • Dark Sacred Night, The Night Fire, The Dark Hours, Desert Star and The Waiting are Ballard & Bosch books. They count in both the Ballard and Bosch reading orders.
  • If reading the full Bosch universe, publication order across both series is the cleanest path, as crossover titles appear in both lists.

Other Michael Connelly Books Featuring Renée Ballard

Renée Ballard also appears outside her own series:

  • Resurrection Walk, 2023 – Lincoln Lawyer novel where Renée Ballard appears alongside Mickey Haller and Harry Bosch
  • Ironwood, 2026 – upcoming Detective Stilwell novel in which Ballard appears (alongside other series characters).
  • The Hollow, 2026 – Harry Bosch novel where Renée Ballard also appears.

These titles are not required for Renée Ballard’s core series, but are relevant for readers following the wider Harry Bosch universe.

Where to Start with Renée Ballard

New to Renée Ballard? Here are good starting points:

  • Best starting point: The Late Show – introduces Ballard, her background, and the LAPD politics that define her character. Ideal if you want to follow her development from the beginning.
  • If you mainly care about Ballard & Bosch together: start with Dark Sacred Night and continue in order from there. You can circle back to The Late Show later for her solo origin.
  • Full-universe readers: follow the Renée Ballard publication order above and, when you hit crossover titles, also consult the Harry Bosch reading order page.
