Alex Cross Books in Order

The Alex Cross series follows Washington, D.C. detective and forensic psychologist Alex Cross as he hunts serial killers, political conspirators, and some of the most dangerous criminals in the country, often while his own family is directly in the line of fire. It is James Patterson’s longest-running series and the one that built his career, starting in 1993 with Along Came a Spider and now running to 35 books and counting.

The series was adapted into two feature films starring Morgan Freeman Kiss the Girls (1997) and Along Came a Spider (2001) and was rebooted with Tyler Perry in Alex Cross (2012). In 2024, Amazon Prime launched the TV series Cross, starring Aldis Hodge, which introduced the character to a new generation.

Who is Alex Cross?

Alex Cross grew up in Washington, D.C.’s Southeast quadrant after losing both parents as a child and being raised by his grandmother, Nana Mama. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown and a PhD in forensic and abnormal psychology from Johns Hopkins, which became pretty much the foundation for everything he does while solving the cases.

He started his career as a homicide detective with the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, later moving to the FBI as a senior agent, and has since worked in various official capacities, including private psychology practice and consulting roles with both the MPD and the FBI. His longtime partner and childhood friend John Sampson is a always present throughout the series. At home, Alex Cross is a widower and devoted father to three children, Damon, Janelle, and Ali. They all live together with Nana Mama in the family house on Fifth Street. His wife Bree Stone, formerly chief of detectives at Metro, also appears often in later books.

Physically, James Patterson describes Alex Cross as an imposing figure, and he compared him more than once to Muhammad Ali in his prime. He’s also known for being a skilled pianist. He often plays Gershwin on his baby grand piano, which is one of those small details that has stuck with readers across 30+ years of books.

Where to Start With the Alex Cross Series

New to the series? Start here:

Best starting point: Along Came a Spider, Alex Cross’s debut case. It established his character, introduced his partnership with Sampson, and set the tone of the series.

If you came from the TV series: Cross (Season 1) is set early in Cross’s career and is the archetype for the character, setting, and main ideas from the novels. Book 1 is still the best way to start the series.

If you came from the Morgan Freeman films: Kiss the Girls is Book 2 and Along Came a Spider is Book 1, and the films follow roughly the same order and tie naturally to the books.

Prefer to read books as standalones? Most cases in the various books are self-contained, so each works as a standalone novel, but Cross’s personal life, his losses, his family, and his history with recurring enemies slowly builds across the series. If you care about context, it is still best to go back to Along Came a Spider to understand these better.
