Start A New Series With The First Book For A New Read
If you like mystery series, there is always plenty of new books to read, especially if you’ve just finished the last book in a popular series and you’re looking for something new to start. Cozying up with a great book this holidays is a wonderful way to get familiar with a new author or come across a new series by a popular mystery writer.
To wrap up the year, here are a few books in series to browse through based on books I’ve read and reviewed on this blog throughout 2013. Maybe you will find your next favorite series to read and recommend to others as well.
First Book In The Series – Cozy Mystery
Double Whammy by Gretchen Archer (the first in the Davis Way Crime Caper mystery series)
Published in 2013, this is a fun fun fun cozy mystery that you will enjoy particularly if you like the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. I really fell in love with the main character, Davis Day, an ex-cop who finds a job as an undercover investigator at a casino in in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Davis Day is a clever girl who has her way of dealing with “stuff” at the casino and finds herself in dangerous troubles more than once. I love the charming and good natured humor in this book, I had a giggle more than once while reading it. I have the second book in the series, Double Dip, in my TBR (to be read) pile to read in the next few weeks.

First Book In The Series – Romantic Suspense
Resolutions by Teri Riggs (the first in the Honor Guard series)
Resolutions is a hot and steamy romantic suspense novel – military romantic suspense to be exact. It was also published in 2013 and I’m already eagerly waiting for the second book in the series to read. The story is about Eve Taylor who works has a field agent for the FBI, a promotion that she is particularly proud of. Not so much Dillon McKenna (Mac) who loves her deeply but also fears for her life enough to let her go rather than stay by her side when she’s on dangerous missions sent by the agency.
Of course as in every romantic suspense novel, the two lovers get together again, go through a ton of excitement, dangerous action and passionate love and finally realize that their place this life is next to each other and not apart. It is a fun novel that is worth reading if you enjoy the romantic suspense genre.

First Book In The Series – Thriller
Sweet Dreams by Aaron Patterson (first in the Mark Appleton Thriller series)
Sweet Dreams was published in 2008 and it was new to me until earlier this year when I got a chance to read it – and review it. I bought it merely on the premise written about at Amazon, and I have to say, I was not disappointed. I’m reading soon the next book in the series, In Your Dreams.
This is an engaging thriller following Mark Appleton, a very regular guy who loses his family (wife and kid) during an explosion at the supermarket. This tragic event is followed by a story so unbelievable and crazy that you have to suspend your belief while reading it – however that’s the beauty of fiction novels – you can read and enjoy them while knowing that it’s not highly likely something like this will ever happen to you.

First Book In The Series – Crime Mystery
The Last Clinic by Gary Cussick (first in the Darla Cavannah Mystery series)
Here is another wonderful book I’ve got a chance to read earlier this year. It was published in 2013 and so far it’s the only book in the series.
The story is about Darla Cavannah, a detective with the Jackson police department who is on a sabbatical after her husband, a football player, died in a car accident half a year ago. However her boss asks her to come back to work as there are some new cases that require her expertise and knowledge as a hate crime specialist.
It is a fun crime mystery novel, which is kind of in the middle between a cozy mystery and a nail biting thriller. I loved and here is my review.
First Book In The Series – Adventure
The Ark by Boyd Morrison (first in the Tyler Locke series)
The first book in the Tyler Lock series was published in 2009, but again I only got to read it earlier this year. A very well written first book with a fun storyline that is full of action, suspense and just a bit of romance. If you like the James Rollins Sigma Series, I think you will find this first book to your liking.
I have also read and reviewed the second book in the series, The Vault, and book #3 is on my TBR list, hope to get to it this winter as well.
Here is my review of The Ark
A few more notable first books in mystery series that I have reviewed on the blog:
Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters, the first book in the Amelia Peabody archaeological mystery series
The Crossing Places by Elly Griffiths, the first book book in the Ruth Galloway archaeological mystery series
City of Bones by Cassandra Clare, the first in the popular The Mortal Instruments paranormal mystery series
Stalkers by Paul Finch, the first in the DS Heckenburg crime mystery series
Everyone Lies by A.D. Garrett, the first in the DI Kate Simms crime mystery series
