Mary Torjussen was born in Liverpool and grew up in England in Stoke-on-Trent in in Staffordshire, in a working-class family, as the 4th in a family of 9 children. She always loved reading books and writing her own storied, even as a child.. She developed a love for reading at a young age, devouring books by authors such as Agatha Christie and Ruth Rendell.

Before attending university, she worked as a secretary. After studying English literature at university, she has earned a Master’s degree in Creative Writing from Liverpool John Moores University. Next, she worked as a teacher for several years and a journalist before turning to writing full-time. Also, before writing books, she has worked as a teacher to kids age 16-18 in Liverpool for a number of years.

Mary Torjussen’s debut novel is titled My Time, Your Time, 2014, followed by The Lonely Cool Before Dawn, also published the same  year. Neither of these self-published books are available to officially buy anywhere right now.

Mary Torjussen’s first officially released novel that is still in publication, Gone Without a Trace, was published in 2017 to critical acclaim. The novel tells the story of Hannah Monroe, a successful marketing executive whose life is turned upside down when her boyfriend Matt disappears without a trace. As Hannah sets out to uncover the truth about Matt’s disappearance, she is forced to confront uncomfortable truths about their relationship and her own past.

The success of Gone Without a Trace cemented Torjussen’s reputation as a rising star in the psychological thriller genre. Her second novel, The Girl I Used to Be,” was published the following year. It follows the story of Gemma Brogan, a woman who must confront her own past when a body is discovered in her small hometown. Like “Gone Without a Trace,” “The Girl I Used to Be” was a critical and commercial success, earning rave reviews for its gripping plot and vivid characters.

Torjussen’s third novel, The Closer You Get, was published in 2020 and tells the story of a woman named Emily who becomes obsessed with her new neighbor. As Emily’s obsession with the neighbor grows, she begins to uncover dark secrets about his past that threaten to destroy both of their lives. In an interview, Mary Torjussen mentioned that the inspiration for this novel came to her when a friend mentioned a woman they both knew who was having an affair with a married man. After he started the affair with her, he left his wife and moved in with the third party. However, their relationship never really took off, so he moved back home. This made Mary wonder how would this play out if both people were married. Who would be the first to leave home.

In addition to her novels, Torjussen has also published short stories in various anthologies and magazines. Her writing has been praised for its sharp prose, complex characters, and ability to keep readers guessing until the end.
