Books About Sherlock Holmes Throughout The Years

Elementary Sherlock HolmesI think there has never been a more copied, worked and reworked character in the history of literature than Sherlock Holmes. The original 60 stories in one of the best mystery series by Arthur Conan Doyle were published between 1887 and 1927 in 4 novels and 5 collections of short stories. And that should have been the end of it.

Yet even today new stories with Sherlock Holmes and his friend and colleague Dr. Watson are still being published year after year. We see him in mysteries ranging from America to the Far East and the Orient. We see him in detective novels and – not that surprising, in horror and supernatural stories as well.

And we see non-fiction books about him written from every angle possible and unimaginable. Sherlock Holmes is a legend and with good reason.

I wanted to keep a list of all the Sherlock Holmes books published so far, however soon I realized that it is not only a monster of a work – but it has already been done by several other bloggers. With over 400 Sherlock Holmes related novels and 1200 short stories, the total amount of works involving this by now immortal detective comes close to 2000. A staggering number indeed!

Instead of duplicating the lists available online I figured I’ll give you here all the resources currently available with all the books published online. I will only list here books that are not mentioned in the sources below.

If one were to dedicate their time reading only Sherlock Holmes stories, it would probably take them a whole lifetime.

  1. I have been managing the “Database of Sherlockian Pastiches, Parodies and Related Fiction” for over ten years. At last count, it lists more than 10,900 items of fiction set in the “Sherlockian Universe.” I have copies of more than 8,000 of the items listed. The only fictional characters that I know of that have more additional fiction written about them are accounted as sacred to some cult or another. Copies of this EXCEL spreadsheet are available free of charge upon request.

    Sincerely

    1. Philip you haven’t left your website in the comment, however I found it, so added to the list of links for anyone who wants to download the Excel spreadsheet.
