When Peter Grant investigates the death of a jazz player, Cyrus Wilkins, who was also a part-time accountant, the first thing he notices is the music coming seemingly from the body of the deceased. Which means the death might not have been as natural as he was led to believe.

When more jazz players seem to drop dead as well. Peter knows something is very wrong. With the help of his boss, the last official wizard in England, Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale, and also aided by the beautiful jazz aficionado Simone Fitzwilliam, Peter starts to uncover the thread leading to a deadly magical evil that leads right to Peter’s doorsteps.

With Nightingale still recovering from a gunshot wound, in this book, Peter is mostly by himself. And from the first book in the series, he’s grown as a wizard a lot. He’s nothing like Harry Potter, though, but many readers have likened him to Harry Dresden, as a lighter version of him.
