For once, constable Peter Grant and wizard in training has to leave his beloved London and go to rural Herefordshire, where two eleven-year-old girls went missing.
His boss, Nightingale, doesn’t believe that something supernatural is at work, but still, he wants Peter to check it out. When he gets there, at first it seems that nothing weird is going on, so he offers his services to the local police. But the more he investigates, the more he realizes that magic is part of what is going on there, so this will be a case he is well-equipped to deal with.
Along the way, he has to deal with all sorts of magical beings, including magical beats, fairies, and a few gods as well. For this case, Peter gets paired with Beverly Brook, a water nymph/goddess he met before in previous books. The investigation starts pretty standard, but knowing Peter, we know that he will get into his own soon, and even when his boss is away, not at the scene, it will not stop Peter from going after the truth.
