Halloween Mystery Books Released In 2014

2014 has so far has some great Halloween mystery books just in time for the super fun and spooky holidays. From cozy mysteries to thrillers and horrors, everyone can find something that they enjoy. A favorite genre, a favorite author or the sampling of a new story altogether.

I hope you enjoy the new Halloween books that I put together for you. I already have several on my TBR list.

A Biscuit, a Casket by Liz Mugavero

The 2nd book in the Pawsitively Organic Mysteries (published April 1)  is a fun cozy mystery focusing on Kristan “Stan” Connor with her new business in town. People are accepting her and she is now asked to cater a doggie costume party that is hosted by the local Happy Cow Dairy Farm.

Business at the Pawsitively Organic Gourmet Pet Food store is blooming indeed. Afterall pets need to eat organic food as well to stay healthy.

Of course the festivities – as usual – are disturbed by a horrible murder in the near corn maze. Stan is not one to step aside when it comes to solving a murder, so she decides to help the investigations just a bit by finding who killed Hal.


Haunted Hamlet by Kathi Daley

Haunted HamletHaunted Hamlet is the 9th book in the Zoe Donoval cozy mystery series, published August 1. Halloween festivities are approaching and Zoe Donoval is helping set up the Haunted Hamlet – a major even in town which should bring some good money through fundraising to the town’s rather depleted budget.

So things go smoothly – as smoothly as they can go around Halloween until things go wrong and a murder happens. A tourist ghost hunter dies, and with this murder an old one gets new attention as well.

 


The Girl from the Well by Rin Chupeco

the girl from the wellPublished August 5, The Girl from the Well is a paranormal mystery told from the point of view of Okiku, a dead girl who is still around to do an important job: to kill murderers, especially those of children.

The story is creepy, and while not specifically happening around Halloween, it is a great Halloween read. Beware: it’s definitely not a cozy!

 

 


Rebel Without a Cake by Jacklyn Brady

rebel without a cakeThis is the 5th book in A Piece of Cake cozy mystery series, published September 2. It is already available to purchase both in Kindle and paperback format.

Approaching Halloween, Rita Lucero (who is a pastry chef in New Orleans) and miss Frankie (her former mother in law) are catering a big event. They jointly own the Zydeco Cakes bakery in the town,  and the said bakery could surely use a bit more publicity – and hopefully the successful catering will offer just that.

Miss Frankie is a sure trouble-maker, making Rita’s life more difficult than necessary. Afterall Miss Frankie is the one who pushed them into this new catering opportunity, with only a bit of time to prepare for it all.

Luckily Rita – a trouble magnet herself – is not only good at catering, but also solving murders, which she will get to do just that in Rebel Without A Cake.


MARY: The Summoning by Hillary Monahan

Mary the summoningThis is the first book in the new Blood Mary mystery series, published September 2. The book is a mixture of mystery, YA paranormal and horror, and it’s the perfect Halloween read.

Jess, Shauna, Kitty, and Anna are friends and want to summon Bloody Mary. They have all the right ingredients and tools around them. The group summons her, and Bloody Mary appears trapped behind the mirror. Knowing that they can indeed bring her from the world of shadows, they do it again. And again. Until Bloody Mary escapes and seeks revenge.

A creepy tale which should be only read at night if you’re indeed in a Halloween mood.


Bad Apples: Five Slices of Halloween Horror

bad applesThis is an anthology of short Halloween stories written by the authors Edward Lorn, Evans Light, Jason Parent, Adam Light and Gregor Xane. The book was published September 5 and then republished September 14.

Each short tale is a scary Halloween spooky, dark and horror story, and they are the perfect choice to get anyone in the Halloween spirit. The authors are horror novelists and reading this book will definitely make you add them to your favorite authors list.

The stories have been carefully selected for their Halloween theme, and even though each is different from the other, they all make perfect companions for each other.


Stirring the Plot by Daryl Wood Gerber

stirring the plotStirring the Pot is 3rd book in the Cookbook Nook cozy mystery, published September 30. The story takes place in Crystal Cove, CA, and the main character is Jenna Hart, the owner of The Cookbook Nook, what it’s called a culinary bookshop.

There are various spooky events happening around Halloween in town, and Jenna is preparing her shop for the events, especially the Winsome Witches Fair for literacy event. When a murder happens, Jenna and her friends get involved in trying to solve the murder of a person that everyone knew in the community.

All this, of course, despite the annoyance of the local police force, who’d rather solve the murder on their own.


Gossamer Ghost by Laura Childs

gossamer ghostGossamer Ghost is the 12th book in Laura Child’s popular Scrapbooking cozy mystery series. It has a publication date of October 7.

Carmela Bertrand is  the owner of the local scrapbooking store . Halloween is coming and suddenly she finds herself involved in solving the murder of a neighboring store owner, an antique dealer, while also dealing with the Halloween events happening around the same time.

Her boyfriend doesn’t want her involved in the investigation, but as women do it most cozies, she does the interfering with said investigation just fine.


The Legend of Sleepy Harlow by Kylie Logan

legend of sleepy harlowThe Legend of Sleepy Harlow is the 3rd book in the League of Literary Ladies Mystery series published October 7, a fun cozy with a group of women who not only love to read, but also solve murders.

Bea Cartwright is the owner of a bead and breakfast, Chandra Morrisey is a hippy cat lover and Kate Wilder is a local winery owner. The three have to investigate this time the murder of a ghost hunting group leader, especially when it turns out that Kate is the main suspect in the case.

 


Trick or Deadly Treat by Livia J. Washburn

trick or dreadly treatTrick or Deadly Treat is book #9 in the Freshly Baked cozy mystery series. It is published October 7.

Phyllis Newsom is an ex-school teacher and current baker in Weatherford, Texas. She has her friend Carolyn (also a baker) are preparing for a baking contest who also have to solve the murder of the local vet’s wife, when the vet himself is accused of murdering his wife.

Phyllis and Carolyn know that the local vet can’t be the killer, so it is up them to prove the police wrong.


A Haunting is Brewing by Juliet Blackwell

a haunting is brewingThis is a short novella in the Witchcraft Mystery series, book #6.5 (published October 21st), which brings characters from author’s both popular series (a Witchcraft Mystery and A Haunted Home Renovation Mystery) together to solve a supernatural problem.

Both Mel Turner, featured in the Haunted Home series, and Lily Ivory, owner of a vintage clothing shop, are living in San Francisco and in this episode they are working together to quiet the spirits in the building so that said building can be used as venue for the local Halloween party.


The Ghost and Mrs. Mewer by Krista Davis

the ghost and mrs mewerThe Ghost and Mrs. Mewer is the 2nd book in the Paws and Claws mystery series (a cozy), to be published December 2. Holly Miller is the owner of the Sugar Maple Inn in Wagtail, Virginia, a hotel for pet owners who need to take their pets with them when away from home.

While Holly Miller doesn’t believe in ghosts and all that stuff, there are many hotel guests who actually do, and when a guest of the Springs Hotel is found dead in the bathhouse, it is up to Holly to prove that it’s not a ghost to committed the crime, but a real person. One who has to go to prison for what they’ve done.

Of course the fact that the said bathhouse is the place of the town’s most legendary haunting doesn’t help her case all that much.
